The lightning network has a few years left at best, it feels like time to let it go, I'm more interested in what comes after.

Dilithium signatures are fine, latency is acceptable, events look comical but that's a UI issue. It would be dilithium or nothing I think, falcon is floating point and needs a highly curated environment (which nostr is definitely not), mayo and the rest no real benefit, and so dilithium it is.

The main thing is there is no way to transition sigs, no backwards compatibility, because there is no timestamp authority in nostr. Without one, you have to essentially burn this current nostr, accept all histories are de-facto back-to-the-future comprised, and start again from zero. If all of nostr can agree on a single timestamp authority then maybe there could be a great wrapping of sorts, but that seems unlikely.

As it stands a schnorr key cannot lay claim to a dilithium key and have that claim survive q-day, and vice versa, a dilithium key cannot lay claim to a schnorr key in the sense that any dilithium key could lay claim to any schnorr key.

All in all nostr is in a uniquely difficult position vis a vis quantum.

One of the many scratch your chin moments when working with enterprises that have PQC requirements (which is many these days) is when you realise there isn't a simple, drop-in Diffie-Hellman analogue for the post-quantum world. We’ve spent decades building things around the DH handshake, but the PQC world is dominated by KEMs, and will likely stay that way for a good while since all the DH analogues we've thought up so far are all pretty wobbly. So it's not just a swap of algorithms, it's a pretty considerable shift in how we handle design and function.

Passkeys are just private keys that sign challenges from within the secure enclave on your iOS device, or from keychain, a TPM, Yubikey, even cross-platform third-party password managers. And with specific protocol scaffolding around them (WebAuthn/FIDO2).

Often when people say they’re doing something with passkeys for nostr it’s not actual passkey passkeys (not WebAuthn/FIDO2), it’s more like “passkey-inspired design". Because passkeys themselves are too limited.
