gm. software engineering in the classic sense is dead.
before you dismiss that as obvious, consider the following:
1. agents have reached a critical level where they're better than almost all human programmers. even when it comes to planning complex architectures.
2. we don't need to drive things on machines we have with us any more. in fact, sitting in front of a screen all day is now an anti-pattern. a powerful laptop can't beat a good desktop (and is less upgradable). you can also leave your iOS, Android, browser, and other hardware attached to your desktop for agents to use.
3. the judgement of what to build (vision) and how to build it (the values that drive decisions while pursuing that vision) has become THE critical skill.
a lot of engineers and builders (myself included) are still holding on to vestiges of a bygone era, mostly because we enjoy the process, but if we're serious about building something impactful, we have to learn to get out of the way.
The Way™
1. Define the problem to solve (vision)
2. Define the constraints (values)
3. Deliver feedback (your own to start, from users as soon as possible)

what’s the highest performance, most reliable relay on nostr right now? not a codebase, an actual relay that’s running.
most strfry instances i know of are running old versions (that still have the 502 issue that was fixed a few weeks ago). many other relays are slow or go down regularly.

There are many shortcuts. There are many half-baked solutions that might get short-term adoption.
Building the thing right has pushed me to the limit many times over the last few years. And yet, I'm still here. Still learning, still building. I'm not going to give up, and I'm not going to cut corners.

Current status:
- Goose (first window) building a nostr relay discovery, monitoring, and data ingester for data science fun.
- Goose (second window) adding MLS test vectors to my mls-ts library.
- Cursor implementing a relay settings screen into the White Noise flutter app.
- Claude building me an MLS ratchet tree visualizer tool so that I can play around with ratchet tree evolution (and share the tool so others can use it too).
- Banging techo set in my headphones so I can dance while watching all the robots do my bidding!

The degree to which non-technical people weigh in on very technical topics in Bitcoin has always surprised me.
It's not like people go around getting pissy with brain surgeons about the merits of a new procedure, or start yelling at particle physicists about the proper way to aim a neutrino...
What makes these folks think that they have any idea about the tradeoffs inherent in complex crypto-systems?
I think more devs (especially the bitcoin core devs) would do well to simply ignore the noise, most of the time. Only give your valuable time to people who have shown the proof of work and bring intellectual honesty to the conversation.

Lazy dev question for relay builders/operators...
When someone publishes a delete request, do you delete the original event completely or just hide it. If you hide it, do you hide it from all users that REQ or just from the person that sent the delete request.
I'm seeing strange behavior with nostr-rs-relay where REQs by other users are returning the events that aren't being shown to the user who deleted them.

For me personally, after talking to LOTS of bitcoiners who are deeply technical and very committed to open source AND still will only use a Coldcard, I'm never going to use anything else.
Call it social heuristics if you want, but I guarantee that 99.9% of bitcoiners (me included) have no idea how complicated it is to keep keys properly secure. If "verifiable source" is the tradeoff required, so be it.
