I Asked Bitcoin To Do Too Much (JWP 129)
Between 2023 and 2025, my Bitcoin position grew so fast I thought I'd solved the wealth problem. Then the market turned, hard and fast, and I found out exactly what I'd built.
Turns out I was asking one asset to be four things at once: my growth, my income, my emergency fund, and my peace of mind. When volatility hit, all four failed together.
In this episode I walk through what actually happened (the renovation, the forced selling, the hardest six months of my marriage) and the framework I'm now using instead: every dollar needs one job, not four.
Growth: Purchasing power over the long run.
Income: Money through the front door, however you make it.
Optionality: Cash and available capital, your buffer to survive and act.
Stability: The base layer you never sell, the thing that lets you sleep.
The mistake wasn't buying Bitcoin. It was the architecture.
If you want to try the exercise: write down everything you own, and one sentence next to each, what job is this actually doing for you. If you can't answer it, you've found the weakest part of your portfolio.

Yes. And it looks great. The issue is Loveable is unable to help with the privacy side of it
We don’t want the user to have any privacy risk (ie health data leaked and potentially used against you)
The suggestion is all device based
But ideally we find someone with decent technical knowledge to help build it privacy-first

Observation: for about 3 weeks I’ve been like a rabbit in headlights, frozen almost, fearful, as the Bitcoin price plummeted.
Only now am I managing to wrestle back control of myself, and start to think rationally.
Huge lessons being dished out by the bear mkt of Q1 2026…
No hedge
No backup plan
No cashflow forecast
No cash reserve
No tracking of historical spending
Sitting on a five bagger of uncrystalised gains for over a year, made me complacent, and I fell for the hopium of higher prices. 150/175/250/even the 400k that was banded around.
I ignored my own advice. Classic ego move. I thought I knew better. I ignored warning signs.
SCombined with shame as things went the wrong way
Ahead I have commitments
- Fixed capex in a renovation
- Monthly expenses
- Holiday bookings
All of which just got a lot more expensive in Bitcoin terms
Ouch
Panic stations even
Thankfully I’ve mellowed out. The situation is my fault. Avoidable. Yes. But reality. And mine to navigate.
Your vision is to be a “word class investor” of humanistic, intellectual, and financial capital, figure it out Jake!
I think the best part: all these failures, are areas I was wrong, and that I can work on for the future. The next time my net assets are 60% higher from here, I know exactly what I’ll do
Reallocate to:
- cashflow
- cash reserves
- cap growth
- speculative
- cap protection
Ultimately I am grateful for these mistakes. Through failure we learn. Indeed, yes it’s at a cost to the balance sheet, but these lessons are a form of intellectual capital
I am better for it
The cost now, will actually make me far more financial capital in the future
Lastly. Beyond blessed with my wife. I’ve made too many mistakes to list here, against her intuition. I was wrong. I will do better

Yeah I am running calcs on sales from last year
My problem is a commitment to capex on a renovation in the next 3 months
Furious with myself for not being better prepared for the drawdown

When you see Oil companies and their connected markets on the rise
In terms of equity price
Is that a reflection of investor appetite for their future cash flows?
Or is that more an indication of inflationary monetary policy?

That means purposefully having no presence on:

- YT
Common wisdom would say that you’re crazy, it’s all about reach, and therefore blasting far and wide
But what if it’s not all about reach? But actually depth? Quality? Key connections over large audience? Long-term property rights
Build the future you want to see…

Was just at the playground with my 2 daughters
They love the game “monsters” or “peter rabbit”
I have to chase them around either as a monster, or a fox chasing a rabbit
Couldn’t help but think about the fact Charlie Kirk’s kids will never get that again
